|
I have a new dress. It's a short-sleeved, babydoll style with an empire waist and hits about 3 inches above my knees; very similar to styles I wore back in the early 90s when babydoll dresses were everywhere. It fits me well (does a nice job of covering up my food baby bump), there's no major cleavage or risk of hoo-ha exposure when I bend over, I still have the legs for it (I think), and I really like it, but I'm having difficulty with the whole "age-appropriate clothes" thing. I mean, I'm 41 years old. I have neither the inclination nor the ass for rhinestone-studded booty shorts, and the opposite end of that spectrum is a granny dress and pilgrim shoes, and I'm not quite ready for that, either.
What I don't want is to look like 'mutton dressed as lamb', as they say; not that there's anything wrong with that if one's heart desires as much, but it's not for me, and I seem to be at some weird crossroads age where clothes are either clearly meant for the late teens and twentysomethings or the retirement community set. Tom Servo's riff "Excuse me, but I couldn't help noticing how much you look like everybody else!" also leaps to mind. Or maybe trivial bullshit is just getting to me more than usual these days. In any case, I'm off to the grocery store in my dress and Chucks, I'll let you all know if anyone points and laughs.

Stephen Colbert + Rush = squee (but I still don't like Jimmy).
And here's the song they should've played tonight (it's not even three minutes long and doesn't require a commercial break):

The New Yorker's Obama cover: satire or no? Personally, I can see what they were trying to do with it: Obama dressed as some kind of Muslim fundy and his extremist wife congratulating themselves with the ohnoez!terrorist fist-bump as the American flag burns in the garbage. Yep, that's satire, all right. It just wasn't especially amusing to those who might be inclined to see an underhanded message in the drawing and believe it will perpetuate that misconception to those who actually think Obama is some kind of radical Muslim who'll bring down the country (and lest we forget, some people really do believe that).
What I guess I'm trying to say is, I get it, I just don't want it.

9:55 am - Hmmm...
|
I can't remember exactly how the subject came up, but last night my dinner companions and I got to talking about school lunches and food allergies. All of us were kids in the 60s and 70s and had shared memories of bag lunches containing a baloney or peanut butter sandwich (breads varied from Wonderbread to my mom's insistence on Roman Meal whole wheat), a piece of fruit like an apple or banana (a bunch of grapes if you were lucky) or carrot and celery sticks, and maybe a little bag of potato chips (we were a Fritos family) or a couple of cookies. Then there was the cafeteria food, which I don't remember much about because I almost always brought my lunch (once in a blue moon I'd get lucky and buy a lunch on the rare pizza or ice cream day). And milk choices: whole, skim, and buttermilk (for weirdos like me), the only beverage besides water from the fountain. I remember a Fanta machine in the teacher's lounge that we kids were forbidden to use, shining like an orange beacon in the far corner of the room.
None of us had, or could remember any other kids having, food allergies. At my school, there was only one kid with an allergy, an older boy who had to carry a hypodermic needle with him at all times because he was deathly allergic to bee and wasp stings. The only reason I remember that is because it was such a bizarre (and scary) anomaly for someone who had herself been bitten or stung by pretty much all of God's biting, stinging creatures by the time she was 12. But I sat last night with parents who had kids with allergies to peanuts, wheat, or milk, and told of lots of other kids who had the same kinds of allergies and then some.
We were wondering why so many kids today have food allergies at all, and to such commonly found substances that didn't seem to cause a lot of problems before. I had never even heard of celiac disease (an allergy to wheat gluten, which, incidentally, is found in pretty much everything these days) until a couple of years ago, but apparently it's much more common than it used to be. Why is that? Everything is loaded with chemicals and hormones and all kinds of other crap that we didn't put in our food until recently. There's overly processed food, fast food, and edible "stuff" that bears no resemblance to what it's supposed to be, i.e., fat-free "cheese" and whatever the fuck that neon green liquid is that's sold in gallon jugs in the grocery store as a cheap alternative to Kool-Aid...and even as I type this sentence, I think I see what at least part of the problem is...economics. We want it cheap, we want it tasty, and we want it now.

It's so hot, the church has a new holy water Slip'N'Slide!
It's so hot, all the squirrels outside are fanning their nuts!
It's so hot, when I came home from the grocery store, the roast was done!
It's so hot, I saw a homeless guy with a sign saying "Will work for alcohol rubdown!"
ANNNNNND...
It's so hot, it smells like sizzling bacon when I walk!

2:58 pm - Because I Used To Be A (Manicurist) Nail Tech
|
On a whim, I went to one of those cheap nail salons and got a manicure this afternoon. The woman sitting next to me was having long fake nails put on using clear plastic nail tips and those colored, glittery acrylic powders to make the design, which was an airbrush art-style beach sunset and palm tree similar to this pic:

The tech applying the nails was a true master, blending each color perfectly from a palette of red, yellow, blue, black, and white powders only, applying the design freehand without any pattern, and each design (or the seven I saw her make, I wasn't there for the first three) was absolutely identical to the one next to it and perfectly adjusted for the size/perspective ratio of each finger. I was amazed (and wondered what the hell she was doing working at a cheap nail salon). None of that technology was available when I was doing nails (we didn't even have pink and white powder yet)...but I would have been all over that shit if it had.

This is Matt Damon, yes, the Matt Damon. Apparently he's filming a movie, which is why he looks the way he does in this picture. Anyway, I'm posting this because he looks exactly like this guy I knew who lived at my condo complex and would come to the pool and chat up all the chicks, failing every time to make an impression beyond 'smarmy'. Bless his heart. But seriously, he looked JUST LIKE THIS: clothes, hairstyle, sunglasses, pale paunch, the works. Not that there's anything wrong with that, mind you, but I was shocked at the similarity. Oh well, guess you had to be there, eh?

1:04 pm - Less Artsy, More Fartsy
|
This is a painting allegedly by Rembrandt, a self-portrait entitled Rembrandt Laughing. Many artsy folk dismissed it as a fake, but it turns out it's real, and it's worth a lot of money. Yadda yadda yadda, doesn't Rembrandt bear a striking resemblance to Bill Maher?

2:09 pm - Again With the 'Meet The Press' Crap...?

I speculate: NBC will give MTP to David Gregory, and give his current hour-long spot on MSNBC to Rachel Maddow (who hints here at wanting her own tee vee show):

I'm not too crazy about the David Gregory part, but the idea of Rachel getting her own show? Oh HALE ya.

Edit: OMG how ironic would it be if Rachel wound up with Tucker's old timeslot?

10:43 pm - *~*squee!*~*
|
This evening I went to see Lewis Black give a Q&A talk as part of his current book tour. Before he came onstage, we were all given little notecards to write any questions for Lewis, and anyway, the moderator picked my question, which was "What do you think of the people who decide to run for President? Do you think they are genuine and honest?" And then Lewis talked about that for ten minutes and then the mod said, "That was a really good question, you should take that one with you!" and Lewis folded up my notecard and put it in his pocket. So he is now walking around with my question in his pocket. *~*squee*~*
Also? I got to meet him and he signed my copy of his book. *~*squee!*~* It was a good evening.

Does anyone care to speculate on who'll get NBC's Meet The Press now that Mr. Russert has passed? I think they'll have a series of guest hosts until after the election, then give it to David Gregory.
